Itineraries for Exploring the Afton, Virginia Area:

Winter (Jan, Feb):

Day One: Check in, put your feet up with a glass of wine by the fireplace, then head out for tastings and truly delicious food at one of Route 151’s restaurants. Devils Backbone has a full bar, live music and a massive Swedish fire pit – so gorgeous! Or, Blue Mountain Brewery is just 4 minutes from our door and has great food, full bar, live music, and week-long corn-hole for laughs and fun. Ask for a brewery tour, all these breweries are proud to show you or talk to you about their craft!

Day Two: Breakfast, head out to Monticello. Monticello was the home of Thomas Jefferson, president of the United States, author of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, and founder of the University of Virginia. The 5,000-acre plantation has guided tours of the house which was designed by Jefferson himself, classes on just about everything, walking trails with educational markers, his historic gardens that fascinate even those of us who are not gardeners! Visit Jefferson Vineyards, one of the first places to introduce modern viticulture to Virginia and enjoy wine from soil dating back to the Jefferson era! Enjoy a colonial lunch at Michie Tavern. Visit nearby wineries Blenheim, owned by singer-song writer, Dave Matthews and Trump Winery, owned by the Trump family; both serve snack plates so you can nibble while saving your appetite for dinner at Charlottesville’s downtown mall, one of the finest downtown parks in America. Every type of cuisine is available on the mall, and the nightlife is perfect for all ages. Before your visit, look up what/who’s playing at the Sprint Wireless Pavilion or the Paramount Theatre. Nothing of interest? Catch a movie at the cafe/bar movie theatre, The Violet Crown, or, ice skate at the massive indoor ice rink right on the downtown mall.

Day Three: Breakfast, then layer your clothing for a day at Wintergreen Resort, stopping at Saddleback Distillery and Bold Rock Cidery for tours (watch apples become hard cider!) and tastings on your way. Wintergreen isn’t just for skiing, feel young again and enjoy snow tubing, ice skating, and the Terrain Park which provides obstacle courses for skiers/snowboarders of all skill levels, then enjoy a show (Rail Jam) with professional skiers wowing you with their ski and snowboarding skills. Not a skier? No problem, plenty to do at Wintergreen and along the way. Or, ask us about golf and antiquing. We have an itinerary for all weather and occasions.

Day Four (or alternate winter day 3): Breakfast, then walk off your meal on our 16 acres of trails (40 minutes maximum), then get ready for a day of relaxation on your Blue Ridge Mountain Wine and/or Brew Tour! Contact us to pick from our pre-set tours, or we can coordinate a tour just for you and your specific tastes. Not a wine or beer enthusiast? See our Experience page for other options!
